Bio
Delman Matola (b. 1996) is a Botswana-born, Malawian visual artist whose work constructs a surreal “blue world” inhabited by his signature Blue Face characters. His practice draws deeply from personal history navigating themes of alienation, belonging, and resilience to create paintings that are both raw and poetic.
Matola’s Blue Face figures emerge from memory and observation, often inspired by people and moments from his past. Through their distorted forms and striking palettes, they embody the tensions between humor and pain, identity and disguise, individuality and community. His art captures the rhythm of lived experience, shaped by displacement, vulnerability, and the pursuit of selfhood across borders.
Raised in Botswana and rooted in Malawian heritage, Matola’s work bridges cultural narratives while remaining fiercely personal. His paintings have begun gaining global attention through digital showcases, where his Blue Face universe resonates with audiences drawn to contemporary explorations of identity and expression.
Through his practice, Matola offers a mirror to the human condition asking viewers to consider the masks they wear, the worlds they escape to, and the fragments of themselves reflected in blue.
