Bio

Fiona is a self-taught pencil artist based in Johannesburg.

Graduating from the University of Johannesburg in 1994 with a National Diploma in Graphic Design – it was actually during this period she developed a passion for the arts and started to explore fine art.

“I strive to push the limits of realism using both charcoal and graphite. I love these two mediums for the drama and contrast I am able to achieve. For me it is important to feel constantly challenged by my subject matter and push the boundaries with each piece I create. My aim is to capture the subject in an immersive, close-up way so that often one is able to stare into the soul of the character. I believe the emotional connection is so much greater that way.

My pieces are inspired by the great faces of the African continent – of humans and wildlife. Faces etched like maps to an Africa that exists in a timeless world, capturing the ageless ceremony, dignity and passion of that character.

Just like the medium I use depicts contrasts – so too is the core of my subject matter. Beauty and grit, strength and humility, power and vulnerability.”

Fiona’s work has been featured in both local and international publications.
She is a founding member of the Drawing Guild of South Africa, and is a Brand Ambassador for LYRA Germany and Canson.

Fiona is represented by the Warren Cary Wildlife Gallery in Limpopo, Lisa King’s “Artrader” Gallery in Sea Point as well as
Signature Art Gallery in Cape Town city.
