Zoe Chowney

Bio

Zoe Chowney is a contemporary artist based in Hermanus, South Africa. Working across a variety of mediums, including jewellery, sculpture, painting and drawing.
Zoë’s creative practice is defined by her exploration of form, material and meaning.

Zoë graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BA in Contemporary Jewellery Design and Manufacturing in 2020, followed by an MA in Visual Arts in 2024.

Her diverse body of work, whether through the fluid lines of a drawing, the boldness of a painting, or the tactile presence of a jewellery piece, consistently explores themes of identity, transformation and the relationship between organic and in the industrial.

The motion of painting, drawing and mark-making during the spontaneous approach of her creative practice is a form of therapy and meditation to her. The event of the free process allows for a space in which she can focus deeply and passionately on her art. She finds pure bliss when she can express herself freely and allow herself to escape into practice. Within her work, she attempts to preserve the simplicity of form and design while maintaining the structure of the material.

She is inspired by the beautiful, diverse environments of South Africa. She wants to capture both the serenity and energy of the landscapes where the untouched beauty of plant life, earth and sky creates a dynamic interplay of forces. From the Arid, rugged terrain of the Karoo to the lush, coastal gardens of the Cape. Her collection reflects love for the land, its natural rhythms and the way organic forms communicate their story to her, through both subtlety and strength.

Zoë pushes the boundaries of what art can be, inviting viewers to engage with her pieces in a deeply personal and thought-provoking way.
